Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven is a 2002 action-adventure game and developed by Illusion Softworks (later known as 2K Czech) and published by Gathering of Developers. It is commonly known as Mafia 1. The game is set in the fictional American city of Lost Heaven during the 1930s and serve as the first installment in the Mafia franchise. It describes the game’s ability to draw the player into the narrative and make them feel part of Tommy’s story, presenting players with the life of Tommy Angelo, a humble taxi driver who is reluctantly drawn into the Salieri crime family.
While balancing loyalty, morality and survival, it gives players the chance to rise through the ranks of the mafia carrying out missions that range from smuggling runs to assassinations. An expansive open-world environment that captures the architecture, vehicles and culture of 1930s with great attention in detail are the core features. Realistic driving mechanics including speed limits and fuel consumption that added immersion uncommon in open-world games of its time are introduced by the game.
