Mafia II was developed by 2K Czech and published by 2K Games. For Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 it was released in August 2010. It is an action-adventure game. A remastered Definitive Edition was launched in 2020. Mafia II takes players into a fictional American city called Empire Bay, inspired by real cities such as Chicago, New York and San Francisco during the 1940s and early 1950s. It served as a sequel to Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven (2002).
It makes it appealing to fans of mafia fiction and historical narratives as the game provides a mature and engaging story that mirrors classic gangster films. A realistic depiction of mid-20th-century America, complete with period-accurate cars, architecture, fashion and music are the key features. The gameplay is largely mission-based as it combines driving, shooting and hand-to-hand combat as the open-world environment enables unrestricted movement. Dynamic weather, day-night cycles and destructible environments are included in the game.
